Desh Bhagat University has appointed Arjun Awardee and one of the
strongest pillars of Indian women hockey, Dr. Roopa Saini as
Director-Sports. In Indian sports, Dr. Saini is a very well-known name.
She has served Indian hockey for more than two decades and has a long
sports, teaching and administrative experience. Government of India
honoured her with Arjuna Award for her excellent contribution in the
development of Indian hockey. She was then the youngest sportsperson of
the country to get this prestigious award. Punjab Government also
honoured her with Nishan-E-Khalsa and several other awards. Dr. Saini
represented Indian Woman Hockey team as captain during Moscow Olympics
1980, World Championship 1979 and World Hockey Cup 1978. She served as a
principal in Govt. Randhir College Kapurthala and Govt. Mahindra
College, Patiala. Besides this , she has remained associated in various
capacities with a number of Women Hockey organistions. While talking
about her vision for the university, Dr. Saini said that she has
observed that students of the university have the potential to do big in
sports and with proper guidance and training, they can achieve any
target. She will try her best to develop the sports capabilities of the
students as well as the reputation of the university to new heights.
While congratulating her on joining, the university Chancellor Dr. Zora
Singh, Pro-Chancellor Tejinder Kaur and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Shalini
Gupta wished her all the best and said that the students will get a lot
of benefit from her long and exemplary sports and educational
experiences and it will help them immensely.
