Desh Bhagat University Organises Awareness Week Against Drugs And Tobacco

Desh Bhagat University Faculty of PG School of Ayurveda and Research Faculty of Nursing in collaboration with ‘Aao Gaon Chalen’, a project of IMA (Indian Medical Association, HQ) organised an awareness week against the use of drugs and tobacco products. Under this week long programme, students took part in different activities. The students organised a rally and went from door to door to make the people aware against tobacco and drugs. Colorful banners and placards with awareness messages were carried by the students to educate the residents against the ill effects of different drugs and tobacco products. They distributed pictorial pamphlets to spread awareness among the local residents and surrounding areas and motivated them to keep away from all kinds of smoking and also exhorted them to make others aware. The students also urged the people to keep their surroundings clean and green and grow maximum number of trees. In the starting days of the awareness week, the students played Nukkad Plays against tobacco and drugs at different places to spread awareness. Desh Bhagat University Chancellor Dr. Zora Singh appreciated the initiative taken by the students in collaboration with IMA’s project ‘Aao Gaon Chalen’. He said that according to World Health Organisation (WHO), the global tobacco epidemic kills’ nearly 6 million people each year, of which more than 600 000 (Six lacs) are non-smokers dying of breathing second-hand smoke. The present situation is very critical and unless we act immediately, the epidemic will kill more than 8.5 million people every year by 2030, he added. CEO of ‘Hara Punjab Khara Samaj ‘ an NGO working for environmental protection and University Pro Chancellor Tejinder Kaur and Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr. Shalini Gupta patted the backs of the students for working to enhance this noble cause. They said that such programmes are very helpful for the people, especially for the rural area people in making them aware against tobacco. Director Faculty of Ayurveda & Research, Dr. Kulbhushan said that students also participated in painting and quiz competitions on the theme “Tobacco & Drugs Kills”. Jyoti and Gauri , students of BAMS 3rd year stood first jointly in Quiz Competition while Upadamdeep and Shradha Maheshwri of the same class stood First jointly in Poster Making Competition, he briefed. University Registrar Dr. Virinder Singh, Controller Examination Dr. Inderjeet Singh Sethi, Director IPD Chetan Gupta, Director Kuldeep Loungia, Director Ramandeep Dhillon , Principal Dr. Smita Johar and other staff members were also present on this occasion.
